Susafa: A Quiet Slice of Rural Sicily

We arrived at Susafa exhausted.

Our four days in Sicily had turned into a whirlwind of day trips, winding roads, and ambitious plans to see as much as possible before leaving the island. Susafa, tucked quietly among the rolling hills of rural Sicily, was supposed to be where we slowed down — but instead, we spent most of our stay rushing off to our next excursion.

Ironically, Susafa may have been the place most deserving of more time.

Set among weathered stone buildings, muted golden hills, and peaceful countryside silence, the estate felt beautifully removed from the faster pace of the rest of our trip. Chickens wandered the property, gardens softened the old stone walls, and somewhere among the hills were wine tastings, cooking classes, and a pool we somehow never found.

One evening, tired from a full day of exploring, we asked for something simple to take back to our room for dinner. Instead, the hosts led us upstairs to a quiet rooftop terrace overlooking the Sicilian countryside.

They served us fresh burrata, tomatoes, warm bread, olive oil, and very good wine as storm clouds rolled over the hills in the distance. Their sweet Weimaraner wandered over to say hello while we sat there quietly wondering why we hadn’t planned more time to simply stay still.

That dinner became one of my favorite memories from Sicily.
